Cultural fire is a traditional land stewardship practice used by Indigenous communities to restore balance, support healthy ecosystems, and renew relationships with the land. In January, the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe returned cultural fire to ‘Ootchamin ‘Ooyakma Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve for the first time in more than 150 years. Guided by teachings shared with the North Fork Mono Tribe, Muwekma leaders and youth carried out a small‑scale training burn, offering prayers, teachings, and hands‑on learning for partners and students.
